The Bricks-n-Books Project
The Founder

My Greatest Legacy

Thank you for your interest in the Bricks-n-Books Project.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.”  One of the things that matters is ensuring that an adequate education is available for all youth.  One that will prepare them for their and our future.

My name is Samuel C. Harrell; I am the founder and chairman of the National Bricks-n-Books Project (Bricks-n-Books™). In the turbulent 1960s, I too was an “at-risk” youth. Yet, by the Grace of God and because of my willingness to accept a challenge by stepping outside of the box when an opportunity came my way, I have had many rewarding and exciting life experiences.  I founded Bricks-n-Books™ because of my desire to provide those important experiences to future generations. During my 38-year professional career, I have worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as well as in the aerospace and defense industry.  While at NASA, working as a contractor, I had the privilege of being part of such historic projects as the Apollo-Soyuz program and the Space Shuttle test launch, as well as many unmanned space projects.

When working in the aerospace and defense industry, attached to the Pentagon, I was part of a 15-man team that developed and deployed tactical systems to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and numerous military bases around the world. After leaving the aerospace and defense industry in the late 1980s, I started three Internet–based companies prior to forming the National Bricks-n-Books™ Project.

The culmination of all of my experiences, as well as my desire to do something that “matters,” has led me to get directly involved in the education of our youth, in whatever way I can. Although many of my past experiences have been both exciting and rewarding, I feel that my greatest secular accomplishment will come from the actions that I am taking now to share with those young men and women in America’s disadvantaged neighborhoods. Those who are still in their formative years! Those whose ideals and morals are being shaped by what they see and hear everyday! Those whose expectations of the future are determined not by their own experiences, but primarily by their belief that the efforts they put into a goal should and will reap positive results.
